Meek's Run Conservation Area
HOLT successfully sought funding through the Pennsylvania Keystone Land Trust Grant Program to acquire the Meek's Run Conservation Area, a 37-acre tract in HOLT's proposed Montour Greenway, located adjacent to the Londonbury plan in Moon Township.
This area, now dedicated as open space, originally was planned for 59 housing sites. Grading was halted by the PA Department of Environmental Resources because of existing wetlands. For years the parcel has been a favorite outdoor laboratory for the Herpetological Society at the Pittsburgh Zoo, and members regularly would visit from the spring until fall, searching for the Jefferson Salamander and numerous other amphibians and reptiles.
The acquisition protects approximately a linear half-mile of both banks of Meek's Run, a tributary of Montour Run. A 1996 Corps of Engineers study of water quality in the Montour Run Watershed found that Meek's Run carries some of the cleanest water entering the Montour Run. Land Steward: If you have any questions concerning use of the property or want to discuss the possibility of a scientific study or visit by a school class, call the Land Steward, Barbara Ploy, through the HOLT office at 264-5354.
