Who We Are

The Hollow Oak Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on conservation of land and natural resources in western Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Most of our members live in western Allegheny County, but some are also found as far away as California. ROOTS, the organization newsletter, is published quarterly and is a source of information on current conservation and community issues. Once a year, a members' meeting is held. Previous meetings have hosted speakers including municipal officials, Mayor Tom Murphy of Pittsburgh, and Secretary John Oliver of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

One area of concern is the Montour Run Watershed, which is home to a variety of natural and cultural resources. The 37-square-mile watershed includes portions of the townships of Findlay, Moon, North Fayette, and Robinson as well as the Borough of Coraopolis. Within the stream valley community residents enjoy the Montour Trail, a Rails-to-Trails project, an attractive resource for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and hikers. The tranquility provided by the watershed provides a welcome relief after a long day on the job.

HOLT works to acquire land for conservation through acquisition and conservation easements. In addition, HOLT promotes the education of the public and municipal officials on conservation issues. Conservation efforts within and along the airport corridor serve to balance the pressures of commercial and residential development of the area. HOLT partners with area organizations to implement projects which will establish a greenway in the Montour Valley.
